Connecticut Requirements

Connecticut Auto Insurance Minimum Requirements (2026)

Connecticut requires every registered vehicle to carry 25/50/25 liability coverage — $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 property damage — plus uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at those same 25/50 limits. These minimums did not change for 2026.

Connecticut is one of the states that mandates uninsured motorist coverage, which surprises drivers moving in from elsewhere. Collision and comprehensive are not required by the state — but if you have a loan or lease, your lender almost certainly requires both. You must also keep your insurance ID card and registration in the vehicle.

Connecticut minimum auto insurance requirements for 2026
CoverageWhat it pays forCT minimum
Bodily injury liability Injuries you cause to one other person $25,000
Bodily injury liability Total injuries you cause in one accident $50,000
Property damage liability Damage you cause to vehicles or property $25,000
Uninsured / underinsured motorist Your injuries when the at-fault driver has no or too little coverage $25,000 / $50,000
Collision Your vehicle after an at-fault crash Not required
Comprehensive Theft, weather, fire, hitting an animal Not required

Why the minimum is rarely enough: $25,000 is roughly the cost of a single ambulance ride plus a short hospital stay. A serious accident routinely runs past $100,000. Anything above your limit comes out of your own pocket — and in Connecticut an injured party can pursue your wages, savings, and home equity to collect it. Carrying 100/300/100 typically costs a few dollars a month more than the state minimum.

Common Questions

Auto Insurance FAQs

What is the minimum auto insurance required in Connecticut?
CT requires 25/50/25 liability: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is also required at the same limits. However, these minimums are often insufficient — a serious accident can quickly exceed them, leaving you personally liable for the difference.
Should I carry more than the minimum liability?
In most cases, yes. Medical bills from a serious accident can exceed $100,000 quickly. If you have significant assets — a home, savings, retirement accounts — minimum limits put them at risk. We'll walk you through the right limits for your situation.
What's the difference between collision and comprehensive?
Collision covers damage from hitting another car or object. Comprehensive covers everything else: theft, vandalism, fire, floods, fallen trees, hitting a deer. Both are subject to your chosen deductible. If you have a loan or lease, your lender typically requires both.
How do I lower my premium without losing important coverage?
Raise your deductible (if you can afford it out of pocket), bundle with home insurance, ask about good student or good driver discounts, and shop multiple carriers. Ken does all of this as part of the quoting process — you'll see exactly what each adjustment saves.
Does my auto insurance cover me if I drive for Uber or DoorDash?
Typically no — personal auto policies exclude commercial use. Rideshare and delivery driving require either a rideshare endorsement or a commercial auto policy. Ken can help you find the right solution without paying for more than you need.
