Working With KOA
About Our Agency
What makes KOA different from going directly to an insurance company?
When you buy directly from an insurer, you're working with a captive agent who can only offer that company's products. KOA is an independent agency — we have access to 20+ top-rated carriers and shop the market on your behalf. We work for you, not the insurance company. That means unbiased advice, multiple options, and our continued advocacy if you ever have a claim.
What does it cost to work with KOA?
Nothing out of pocket. We're compensated through commissions paid by the insurance carriers — this is already built into every insurance premium regardless of whether you use an agent or buy direct. Using an independent agent like KOA costs you nothing extra and gives you professional guidance, market access, and an advocate at claim time.
How do I get a quote?
You can start online using our quote form, call us at (877) 275-0214, or schedule an appointment — in person at our Manchester, CT office or virtually. We'll gather the information we need and come back with competitive options from multiple carriers.
What states are you licensed in?
We're based in Manchester, CT and are licensed in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Florida, Arizona, and additional states. If you're not sure whether we serve your state, just call or email us.
Can I meet with Ken in person?
Absolutely. Our office is at 48 Purnell Place, Suite 10, Manchester, CT 06040. We're also available on weekends by appointment for clients who work during the week. Virtual meetings via phone or video are available for out-of-state clients or anyone who prefers the convenience.
Coverage & Policies
Understanding Your Insurance
What is an insurance deductible?
A deductible is the amount you pay out-of-pocket before your insurance coverage kicks in. For example, if you have a $1,000 deductible and suffer $5,000 in damage, you pay $1,000 and insurance pays $4,000. Higher deductibles lower your premium but increase your out-of-pocket cost at claim time. Ken helps you choose a deductible that balances cost and risk based on your financial situation.
What's the difference between actual cash value and replacement cost?
Actual Cash Value (ACV) pays what your property was worth at the time of loss — accounting for depreciation. A 5-year-old TV might only pay out $150. Replacement Cost Coverage pays what it costs to replace the item with a new equivalent — no depreciation applied. Replacement cost coverage costs more in premium but pays significantly more at claim time. Ken recommends replacement cost for most clients.
What is an umbrella policy?
An umbrella policy provides additional liability coverage above the limits of your existing home and auto policies — typically in increments of $1 million. If you're sued for an amount exceeding your underlying policy limits, the umbrella covers the difference (up to its limit). It's one of the most cost-effective coverages available — often $200–$400/year for $1M in additional protection.
Does bundling really save money?
Yes — typically 10–25% when combining home and auto with the same carrier. The discount comes from reduced administrative costs and the insurer's desire to keep multiple policies with one customer. KOA always shows you the bundled price versus individual policy pricing so you can make an informed decision. The savings are real and consistent.
What is an insurance binder?
A binder is temporary proof of insurance coverage issued immediately while a formal policy is being processed. It confirms your coverage is in effect and is often required by lenders, landlords, or at vehicle registration. KOA can issue binders quickly — often same-day for personal lines policies.
Claims
When You Need to Use Your Insurance
What do I do if I need to file a claim?
Call Ken first. As your agent, we can help you understand what's covered, what documentation you'll need, and guide you through the process. You can also file directly with the carrier — KOA clients have carrier contact info readily available. We stay involved throughout the claim process to make sure you're treated fairly.
Will filing a claim raise my rates?
It depends on the type of claim, the carrier, and your claim history. At-fault auto accidents and certain home claims can affect your premium at renewal. Some carriers offer accident forgiveness. Ken can help you evaluate whether to file a claim or pay out-of-pocket based on the claim amount versus your deductible and potential rate impact.
What if my claim is denied?
Claim denials can be appealed. As your independent agent, KOA can advocate on your behalf — reviewing the denial reason, helping you gather supporting documentation, and escalating within the carrier if appropriate. This is one of the key advantages of working with an agent versus buying direct.
